romney/ryan, romney/ryan, there we go. that's great. >> he's having to introduce them there to his name and his running mate's name. >> they were getting the hang of it. >> it was good. it's a bit of a problem though, isn't it, because some of his advisers are actually saying their internal polling shows that they're still in this fight and yet all the published polling that we have access to suggests that things are slipping away. >> that's right. and a lot has been made, you know, we have the debates coming up, they could be pivotal and they certainly could be but we've heard that in the past. his vice presidential pick was supposed to dang the dynamics. his speech at the rnc was supposed to change the dynamics. all these pivot points have actually gone in the other direction. i think voters are getting locked into their decision ahead of the debates. it's hard to imagine mitt romney having such a stellar debate performance that he could really turn this thing around. >> are you sensing there's almost a rhythm of failure

romney, ryan, romney, ryan, romney, ryan. there we go. all right, that's great. thank you. >> it's possible to forgive poor mitt romney for feeling a little overshadowed by his running mate. after all, it's hard to compete with a guy who can catch fish with his bare hands while at the same time promoting a budget that would rob kids of their free lunch meals. how much of mitt romney's campaign belong to mitt romney? you can't help but wonder if mr. romney is just going along for the ride. joining us is tim dickinson of "rolling stone." his new article is in the current issue of the magazine and an excellent read it is, too. tim, i'd like to show you something before we delve into your article. just take a listen to this, tim. >> the only thing that limits you is your god given talent and your own effort. we need to have that dynamic economy returned. do you that by growing the economy and getting people a hand up, not a hand out. teach a man how to fish, he can feed himself for a life. don't simply feed fish. >> right. sow doesn't believe in handouts. he won't ev

the best attack ad on romney is mitt romney. to pick up on michael and michelle's point, what is romney going to come with in the campaign to have a good showing? he can't talk about taxes with tacks being the lowest they have been in 50 years. he can't talk about medicaid and medicare because their policies are unpopular. he can't talk about foreign policy, he doesn't have anything. the only thing he can argue is that obama has not been a good steward of the economy, but as we know, obama has a very good answer to that. and that's on offense. then you think about what he has to do on defense. he's going to be on the defense on the 47%. he's going to be on defense on his tax question. i mean, this is a guy who doesn't have very much to work with at this point. so it's hard for me to see, even if he doesn't make a major gaffe, which he does on a weekly basis, even if he doesn't, what ammunition does he have to actually have a good showing? >> i'm told there are examples of elections turning on debates, president bush for example
